About This Trail

Short but solid. 2.6 miles with enough elevation to feel like real hiking. Steady climb through woods with rocky sections. Views of the Hudson River at the top are perfect - we've done this one a bunch of times and never get tired of it.

Our Review

Moderate★★★★☆ 4.5/5

Anthony's Nose is one of our go-to recommendations for friends who are just getting into hiking. It's short enough that you won't feel wiped out, but the views at the top? Unreal. We've done this one probably a dozen times and it never gets old.

The trail climbs steadily through the woods with some rocky sections that keep things interesting. It's only about 2.6 miles round trip, but the elevation gain is legit - you'll feel it on the way up. We always joke that the first ten minutes are the hardest because it's steep right out of the gate.

When you pop out at the overlook, it's one of those "wow" moments. The Hudson River stretches out below you, the Bear Mountain Bridge is right there, and on a clear day you can see forever. We've brought sandwiches up here and just hung out for an hour watching the boats go by.

A few things we've learned: parking can be tricky on weekends, so arrive early. And bring a map if it's your first time - there are a couple trail intersections where it's easy to take a wrong turn. But overall, this is a perfect half-day hike that delivers way more than its short distance might suggest.

Tips for Hikers

Start Early for Parking

Arrive at the trailhead early, especially on weekends or during peak seasons. The parking area fills up quickly, and securing a spot can be challenging later in the day.

Footwear Matters

Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction. Some sections of the trail can be rocky and uneven, especially as you ascend. Proper footwear will provide better grip and stability.

Pack Light, but Essentials

Bring water and a light snack to stay hydrated and energized. Additionally, considering the moderately steep sections, a walking stick or trekking poles can be handy for stability.

Photography Opportunities

Don't rush! Take your time at the summit to enjoy the incredible views and capture some amazing photos. Consider bringing a camera or smartphone for stunning snapshots of the Hudson River and surrounding landscapes.

Weather Awareness

Check the weather forecast before your hike and dress accordingly in layers. The weather at the top can be different from the trailhead. Additionally, during colder seasons, the trail might get icy, so traction devices could be beneficial for safety.

What to Bring

These are the items we bring on every hike. Links help support this site at no extra cost to you.

Hiking Boots

Rocky, rooted trails in the Northeast need real ankle support.

We use: Merrell Moab 3 Mid WP

Water Bottle / Hydration Pack

Bring at least 2 liters. Most trails here don't have safe water refill points along the route.

We use: CamelBak Chute Mag 32oz

Daypack (20–30L)

Fits water, food, rain layer, headlamp, and a basic first aid kit comfortably.

We use: Osprey Talon 22

Trekking Poles

The rocky ridges here — especially on descents — are much more manageable with poles.

We use: Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork

Headlamp

Trail forests get dark fast. Always carry one even on planned half-day hikes.

We use: Black Diamond Spot 400

Rain Jacket

Northeast mountain weather is unpredictable. Afternoon storms roll in without warning — always have a packable layer.

We use: Marmot PreCip Eco Rain Jacket
