Our Review

Challenging★★★★☆ 4.5/5

We first hiked Giant Ledge on a crisp October morning, and honestly, we weren't ready for how good the views would be. The trail starts off gentle enough through the woods, but it picks up quickly - there are some steep, rocky sections that had us catching our breath more than once. Nothing crazy, but you'll definitely feel it in your legs.

The real payoff comes at the ledges. We hit the first overlook and just stood there, speechless. Ridge after ridge of Catskill peaks stretched out in every direction, the fall colors absolutely on fire. We must have spent twenty minutes just sitting on the rocks, snacking and soaking it in. If you keep going to Panther Mountain, the summit is quieter and more wooded, but it's worth it for the solitude.

One thing to know: the trailhead parking fills up fast on weekends. We learned that the hard way and had to wait for a spot. Get there early. Also, the trail markings are solid - we never felt lost. This is one of those hikes where the effort-to-reward ratio is just perfect. We keep coming back to it.

Tips for Hikers

Start Early for Parking

Parking at the trailhead can fill up quickly, especially on weekends or during peak seasons. Arrive early to secure a spot and avoid potential parking issues.

Sturdy Footwear

The trail includes rocky sections and uneven terrain. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction to navigate comfortably and prevent slips.

Layers for Weather

Weather in mountainous areas can change suddenly. Bring layers, including a windproof and waterproof outer layer, to be prepared for changing conditions, especially at higher elevations.

Water and Snacks

Carry enough water and snacks to stay hydrated and fueled throughout the hike. The multiple overlooks are perfect spots for a rest and a snack break while enjoying the views.

Pack Lightly

While enjoying the views, consider bringing a lightweight chair or blanket to sit on while resting at the viewpoints. It can enhance your comfort while taking in the stunning scenery.
