Our Review

Moderate★★★★☆ 4.6/5

Gertrude's Nose might be our favorite hike in the Shawangunks. At 7.5 miles, it's a solid day hike - long enough to feel like an adventure, but not so long that you're dragging yourself back to the car.

The trail takes you through beautiful pine forests and along stunning white rock formations that are unique to the Shawangunk Ridge. There are some rocky sections and a few spots where you need to scramble a bit, but nothing we'd call dangerous. Good shoes are a must though - those rocks can be slippery.

The views along the cliff edge are spectacular. You look out over the Wallkill Valley and it just goes on and on. We always stop at the main overlook at Gertrude's Nose itself and just sit there, taking it all in. It's one of those places where you feel like you're on the edge of the world.

One thing we'll mention: some of the trail intersections could use better signs. We took a wrong turn once and added about half a mile before we realized. Bring a trail map or download the route on your phone beforehand. Also, the parking area at Minnewaska can fill up on weekends, so plan to arrive early. Trust us, this hike is worth the early alarm.

Tips for Hikers

Start Early

Begin your hike early in the day to allow ample time for exploration and to enjoy the stunning views without feeling rushed. This also helps in securing a parking spot, especially on weekends or busy days.

Proper Footwear

Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good traction. The trail includes rocky sections, so footwear that provides stability and ankle support is crucial for a comfortable and safe hike.

Pack Essentials

Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug repellent. The trail can be demanding, and having essentials will keep you hydrated, energized, and protected from the elements.

Navigation Aids

Carry a trail map, GPS device, or smartphone with a reliable hiking app. While the trail is generally well-marked, having navigation aids helps, especially at junctions or if you're exploring side paths.

What to Bring

These are the items we bring on every hike. Links help support this site at no extra cost to you.

Hiking Boots

Rocky, rooted trails in the Northeast need real ankle support.

We use: Merrell Moab 3 Mid WP

Water Bottle / Hydration Pack

Bring at least 2 liters. Most trails here don't have safe water refill points along the route.

We use: CamelBak Chute Mag 32oz

Daypack (20–30L)

Fits water, food, rain layer, headlamp, and a basic first aid kit comfortably.

We use: Osprey Talon 22

Trekking Poles

The rocky ridges here — especially on descents — are much more manageable with poles.

We use: Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork

Headlamp

Trail forests get dark fast. Always carry one even on planned half-day hikes.

We use: Black Diamond Spot 400

Rain Jacket

Northeast mountain weather is unpredictable. Afternoon storms roll in without warning — always have a packable layer.

We use: Marmot PreCip Eco Rain Jacket
