Our Review

Challenging★★★★☆ 4.5/5

Indian Head and Twin Mountains is one of those hikes that really earns its views. The trail is about 7 miles with 2,000 feet of elevation gain, so it's a proper workout. We were feeling it the next day, but in a good way.

The highlight is the Indian Head overlook. When you step out onto the ledge and see the Catskill valley spread out below you, it's absolutely breathtaking. We've been there in fall when the colors were insane, and in summer when everything was lush and green - both times it stopped us in our tracks.

The trail has some steep sections, especially on the way up to Indian Head, with rocky terrain that requires some careful footing. Nothing you need ropes or gear for, but sturdy boots are a must. Continuing on to Twin Mountain adds more distance and elevation, but the additional views are worth it if you have the energy.

Trail markers are generally good, though we did have to pay extra attention in a few rocky spots where the blazes weren't immediately obvious. Our advice: start early to get good light for photos at the overlook, bring more water than you think you need, and save some energy for the descent - it's rocky and your knees will thank you for going slow.
