Our Review

Easy★★★★☆ 4.2/5

If you're looking for a peaceful, easy stroll with gorgeous views, Poets' Walk is your trail. This is one we do when we want to get outside but don't want to break a sweat. At about 2.4 miles through rolling fields and gentle woods, it's more of a nature walk than a hike - and we mean that as a compliment.

The views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains from the various overlooks are beautiful. There are benches and little gazebo-like structures along the way that are perfect for sitting and just enjoying the scenery. We've packed a picnic here more than once and it always feels like a mini vacation.

The trail is flat, well-marked, and well-maintained. It's great for kids, older folks, or anyone who just wants a pleasant outdoor experience without technical terrain. We've seen people walking here in regular sneakers and that's totally fine.

This is one of those places that has real charm - the fields, the old trees, the river views. It feels a bit like stepping into a painting. We like to come here on quiet weekday afternoons when we have the place almost to ourselves. It's not going to challenge you physically, but it'll recharge your soul.

Tips for Hikers

Comfortable Footwear is Key

The trail at Poet's Walk Park includes varied terrain, so wear comfortable hiking shoes with good traction. This will provide stability, especially on inclines and uneven surfaces.

Binoculars for Bird Watching

Bring binoculars if you're a bird enthusiast. The park is known for diverse bird species, and having binoculars enhances the experience, allowing you to appreciate the feathered residents along the trail.

Seasonal Considerations

Check the seasonal conditions before heading out. In the fall, the foliage is stunning, while spring brings blossoming flowers. Be prepared for weather changes and wear layers accordingly.

Picnic Planning

Pack a picnic! There are scenic spots along the trail that are perfect for a relaxing break. Bring some snacks and enjoy the picturesque views of the Hudson River.

Early Morning Advantage

Consider starting your hike early in the morning. This not only allows you to experience the trail with fewer crowds but also provides a chance to witness a serene sunrise over the Hudson Valley.

What to Bring

These are the items we bring on every hike. Links help support this site at no extra cost to you.

Hiking Boots

Rocky, rooted trails in the Northeast need real ankle support.

We use: Merrell Moab 3 Mid WP

Water Bottle / Hydration Pack

Bring at least 2 liters. Most trails here don't have safe water refill points along the route.

We use: CamelBak Chute Mag 32oz

Daypack (20–30L)

Fits water, food, rain layer, headlamp, and a basic first aid kit comfortably.

We use: Osprey Talon 22

Trekking Poles

The rocky ridges here — especially on descents — are much more manageable with poles.

We use: Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork

Headlamp

Trail forests get dark fast. Always carry one even on planned half-day hikes.

We use: Black Diamond Spot 400

Rain Jacket

Northeast mountain weather is unpredictable. Afternoon storms roll in without warning — always have a packable layer.

We use: Marmot PreCip Eco Rain Jacket
