Easy Hikes in the Hudson Valley with Incredible Views
Someone told us once that the best views are earned. We disagree. Some of the most beautiful places in the Hudson Valley are on trails that almost anyone can walk. You don't need to scramble, you don't need to be fit, you just need to show up.
Here are our favorite easy Hudson Valley hikes where the scenery punches way above the difficulty level.
1. Poets' Walk Trail

Distance: 2.2 miles | Difficulty: Easy | Elevation Gain: Minimal
This is the trail we bring people to when they say they don't hike. Two easy miles through a beautiful historic landscape park in Rhinebeck, with open views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. There are benches, gentle paths, and viewpoints that look straight out of a 19th-century painting. It's calm, beautiful, and requires almost no effort. Perfect.
2. Mount Beacon

Distance: 3.8 miles round trip | Difficulty: Moderate (steep) | Elevation Gain: ~1,500 ft
Okay, it's on the steeper side of easy, but the trail itself is straightforward, no scrambling, no route-finding, just steady climbing on a clear path. The reward is huge: panoramic views from the summit ruins of an old casino, with the Hudson River and the whole valley spread out below you. If you can handle the climb, the views are among the best in the region.
3. Lambs Hill

Distance: 2.5 miles round trip | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Elevation Gain: ~600 ft
Lambs Hill is the quiet little gem near Beacon that most people drive right past. The trail is short, the terrain is manageable, and the views from the top, Hudson River on one side, rolling hills on the other, are genuinely excellent. Perfect for a weekday afternoon or when you want something short but satisfying.
4. Nuclear Lake Loop

Distance: 5 miles loop | Difficulty: Easy | Elevation Gain: ~400 ft
Despite the unsettling name (the lake is perfectly safe), this is one of our favorite easy hikes in the Hudson Valley. You follow the Appalachian Trail through peaceful forest to a quiet lake and then loop back through the woods. The terrain is mostly flat, the trail is well-marked, and the whole thing feels refreshing rather than exhausting.
5. Anthony's Nose

Distance: 2.6 miles round trip | Difficulty: Moderate | Elevation Gain: ~900 ft
Anthony's Nose is on the upper end of easy, there's a real climb here, but it's short enough that most reasonably fit people can do it. And the view from the summit is absolutely worth it: the Hudson River below you, the Bear Mountain Bridge, the surrounding hills. It's accessible by train from NYC, which is a bonus.
Tips for These Hikes
- Wear real shoes: Even easy trails are better in hiking footwear. You'll be more comfortable and less likely to slip.
- Bring water: Even a short hike is more enjoyable with a water bottle.
- Go at your own pace: These aren't races. Stop and enjoy the views, that's the whole point.

What to Bring
These trails are gentler than most, but that doesn't mean you go unprepared. Here's what actually matters.
Trails like Poets' Walk and Lambs Hill are well-graded and don't need heavy boots — a good trail runner is fine.
We use: Brooks Cascadia 17
Even a short hike benefits from a small pack. Keeps your hands free and carries water and a layer.
We use: Osprey Talon 22
Hudson Valley summers are hot and humid. Even on a 2-mile hike, bring at least 1.5 liters.
We use: CamelBak Chute Mag 32oz
These hikes are short, but keeping a small headlamp in your pack is just a good habit.
We use: Black Diamond Spot 400
You might hit an exposed ridge with wind. A packable windbreaker is light enough that you'll forget it's there.
We use: Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket
