Hudson Valley Hikes Under 5 Miles That Deliver Big Views
We've done 15-mile days and we've done 2-mile days, and honestly some of our best hiking memories came from the short ones. Partly because you're not exhausted when you get to the top, partly because you can do two hikes in a day if you want, and partly because the Hudson Valley happens to have some genuinely impressive viewpoints that are very close to the trailhead. Here are the ones worth knowing about.
1. Anthony's Nose

Distance: 2.6 miles round trip | Difficulty: Moderate | Views: Hudson River, Bear Mountain Bridge
One of the best views-per-mile ratios in the Hudson Valley. You hike 1.3 miles, you get to the top, and you're looking straight down at the Hudson River with the Bear Mountain Bridge in the foreground and the Highlands stretching out in every direction. It's short enough that you can do it in the morning and have the afternoon free.
2. Butter Hill–Stillman Trail Loop

Distance: 4 miles | Difficulty: Moderate | Views: Hudson River, Storm King ridge
Four miles in Storm King State Park with two summits and consistent Hudson River views. It's one of those hikes that feels bigger than it is, the ridge sections give you that wide-open feeling you usually only get on longer trails. We do this one a few times a year and it never gets old.
3. Lambs Hill

Distance: 2.5 miles round trip | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Views: Hudson Valley panorama
Lambs Hill is the kind of place locals keep to themselves, and we completely understand why. Short approach, minimal crowds, great view. The trail climbs steadily but never gets technical. At the top you have an open view of the valley that's better than a lot of trails three times its length. Near Beacon, great for a quick morning outing.
4. Nuclear Lake Loop

Distance: 5 miles loop | Difficulty: Easy | Views: Lake, forest, Hudson Valley glimpses
This one is less about the sweeping panorama and more about the peacefulness of the lake and the forest. Five easy miles on the Appalachian Trail through quiet woods with a beautiful lake in the middle. It's accessible by train from NYC, the terrain is easy, and it's a great choice if you want to decompress rather than challenge yourself.
5. Poets' Walk Trail

Distance: 2.2 miles | Difficulty: Easy | Views: Hudson River, Catskills backdrop
Poets' Walk is the one we bring people to when they want to see something beautiful without any effort. It's a historic landscape park in Rhinebeck, wide gravel paths, manicured meadows, and then suddenly you're at an overlook with the Hudson River and the Catskills in the distance. It's more of a walk than a hike, but the views are real and it's genuinely lovely.
6. Bear Mountain Loop

Distance: 4.8 miles | Difficulty: Moderate | Views: Hudson Valley, Manhattan on a clear day
Bear Mountain just barely squeezes under the 5-mile limit and it's probably the most dramatic hike on this list. The summit gives you 360-degree views of the Hudson Valley, on a clear day people claim they can see Manhattan. The trail is well-maintained and popular, which means it's not exactly a secret, but it's popular for a reason.
How to Get the Most Out of Short Hikes
The trick with short hikes is to slow down. You have nowhere to be and nothing to prove. Sit at the summit. Eat lunch at the overlook. Take the photo, then put the phone away for a few minutes and just look at what's in front of you. That's how a 2-mile hike becomes the thing you remember from the whole weekend.

What to Bring
Short hikes still deserve good gear. Here's what fits in a small pack for a Hudson Valley half-day.
Most of these trails are well-graded and short enough that trail runners work great. Save the heavy boots for Breakneck.
We use: Brooks Cascadia 17
A 20L pack carries everything you need without being overkill for a 2–4 mile hike.
We use: Osprey Talon 22
Short hike in July heat still calls for 1.5 liters. Hudson Valley summers are no joke.
We use: CamelBak Chute Mag 32oz
Keep a small headlamp in your pack. These hikes are short, but it's one of those things you regret not having.
We use: Black Diamond Spot 400
Even a gentle ridge can have wind. A light packable layer keeps you comfortable on the exposed sections.
We use: Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket
